Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP)

The OHSP is designed to protect the health and safety of individuals who work with animals and to meet the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service Policy. The University of Missouri and the Animal Care and Use Committee have overall responsibility for the OHSP; Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for administering the program.

Program Requirements

Follow these steps:
  1. The employee's Principal Investigator/Supervisor initiates the review by completing the OHSP Hazard Evaluation Form and e-mailing it to .
  2. EHS will contact the worker to advise them that a medical assessment is recommended, but optional. EHS will speak with the worker about immunization information that the UHC Medicine Specialty Clinic Staff will request at the time of the medical assessment.

    OHSP Medical Assessments:
    Workers may schedule OHSP Medical Assessment appointments by contacting Environmental Health and Safety at 882-7221. Appointment times are Monday and Friday afternoons, 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. All appointments will be in the UHC Medicine Specialty Clinic located inside the University Hospital and Clinics, Room #C1001.

    Parking for an appointment at UHC Medicine Specialty Clinic:
    You may park in the Visitor & Patient Parking Garage attached to the University Hospital. If a guard is at the gate, just let him know that you are there for an appointment in the UHC Medicine Specialty Clinic. If the garage is full, you may park in the overflow parking lot on Monk Drive.

    Finding UHC Medicine Specialty Clinic - Room number C1001:

    Once you enter the University Hospital & Clinics, locate the first floor lobby. In the lobby you will find the information desk and just behind the information desk is a long hallway. Go past the information desk and the East Elevators. Look for the sign "Clinics/Blood Draw". Turn right at the sign and Room #C1001 will be the first door on your left.

  3. If the employee refuses to participate in the medical assessment, the employee must fill out the Refusal Form. This form needs to be signed by the employee and their supervisor and mailed to Environmental Health & Safety, 8 Research Park Development Building, Columbia, MO 65211-3050.

EHS will coordinate the necessary reviews and contact the Principal Investigator/Supervisor and the employee with the risk assessment and safety recommendations.
