LOGIN: MSDS Online

What is MSDS Online?

MSDS Online is a commercial management system that eliminates the need to retain and manage paper ("hard") copies of MSDSs - which was traditionally done in a three ring binder. Instead, MSDSs are managed electronically, which automates the task of keeping those binders up-to-date - while retaining the concept of a binder.

In the program, assigned Administrators will place MSDSs for the products their units use in an electronic binder, known in the system as an "eBinder". General Users, when they login in with their generic unit user name, will generally only see the MSDSs for the products used by their unit - however, the system also allows the user to search the millions of MSDSs available from the vendor. And when a manufacturer updates an MSDS with new information, the system allows MU to instantly update everyone's eBinder at once - so users are getting the most up-to-date information available.

Users: How to Access the System

MSDS Online is being sponsored by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). In conjunction with unit administrators, EHS has set up a system that provides eBinders for various units. You may login from the link at the top of this page, which will open a new page. You may refer back to this page for assistance in using the system.

Users: How to Find an MSDS

To SIGN IN:
  1. Go to the MSDS Online system either from the EHS Web Site, or by entering the direct URL: http://binderview.msdsonline.com/universityofmissouri/
    • To access from the EHS Web Site:
      • Go to: http://ehs.missouri.edu
      • Choose "Chemical Safety" from the left
      • Choose "MSDS Online" from under the Chemical Safety Banner
      • Click on the blue "MSDS Online" link next to "Login:" near the top of the page
  2. NEW: You do not need a login name. You should be in the system immediately.
  3. See below to navigate the system.
To FIND AN MSDS
  1. NEW: Simple Browse View
    • In the light gray area across the top of your screen, choose "Departments."
    • From the list of departments that opens, click on your department name.
    • You will be presented with a list of all of the MSDSs in your department's eBinder. Either locate the MSDS alphabetically, or use the "Search for an MSDS" instructions below.
    • From the results presented, click on the PDF icon (in the View column) to the left of the correct MSDS.
    • The MSDS will open in a new browser window where you can view or print the MSDS as needed.
    • When you are done with the MSDS, close the MSDS window by either using the close box of your browser or the "Close MSDS" link at the top of the MSDS page. (This link only works with some browsers.)
    • If you are finished using the system, then follow the directions below to "Log Out."
  2. Search for an MSDS
    • The system should default to the simple MSDS search. This simple search looks for MSDSs in both your departmental eBinder which should contain all of the MSDSs your unit uses and the larger MSDSOnline database, which contains millions of MSDSs.
    • TIP: Since your eBinder should only have the limited products you actually use, it is better to use part of the name to maximize your search at this point. If you get too many hits, then use more of the name and hit "Search" again. If you get zero results, see the section "If the MSDS is not in your eBinder" below.
  3. If the MSDS is not in your eBinder
    • If you do NOT find the MSDS in your eBinder as described above, then look below where it says there were "0 results" there will be a line which reads: "MSDSOnline has [number] possible matches for your search!" Click on the number to display the MSDSs in the Master database. If there are too many results, modify your search criteria to limit the results.
    • Once again, you can click on the PDF icon in the View column to view or print the MSDS. If this is a product your unit uses regularly, mark the checkbox (in the "Select" column) then click the "Add" button to notify an MU Administrator that the MSDS needs to be added to your unit's eBinder.
      • Be sure to complete all of the information in the pop-up box, including your name and your specific University Department (spelled out) in the "Facility" field so that EHS can locate the proper supervisor to complete your "add" request.
    • If you are finished using the system, then follow the directions below to "Log Out."
To LOG OUT:
  1. Simply close your browser window. There is no "Log Out" button for general users of the system. Tip: If you neglect to close your browser, the system will automatically log you off MSDSOnline in a few minutes.

Departments/Units: How can we get involved in this program?

Contact EHS by phone at (573) 882-7018 or by e-mail at if your unit isn't included. Mention or ask for the EHS MSDS Online Administrator so your query can be directed to the appropriate individual.

To ADD AN MSDS:
  1. Level 2 Administrators Only: Remember that you can add MSDSs to each Level 3 eBinder that you have authority to administer. If the same MSDS needs to be added to multiple Level 3 eBinders, you must repeat the "Assigning MSDS" portion for each Level 3 group.
  2. Check to see if the MSDS is in the MU Master eBinder
    • Click on the Admin Tab at the top, then "Assign/Remove MSDS" on the left side navigation bar.
    • Choose the Level 3 Group you want to assign an MSDS to in the drop down box.
    • Type part of the chemical name in the "Product Name" box, then click "Search." TIP: it is better to use part of the name to maximize your search at this point. If you get too many hits, then use more of the name and hit "Search" again.
    • If you find the MSDS you are looking for, check the white "check box" next to the MSDS and click the "Add to Group" button (located below choices are selecting from). Repeat Step 2 for additional MSDSs you wish to add to the Level 3 groups you can administer.
    • If you do not find the MSDS you are seeking, you must follow step 3 below to add it to the MU Master eBinder then repeat this section.
  3. To add an MSDS to the MU Master eBinder
    • Click on "Add New MSDS to Company eBinder"
    • Enter Search Criteria in the boxes and click "Search." If you find you are getting too many hits, you can add more information in the search boxes or use the "go to Advanced Search" link.
    • Make sure you are choosing the correct MSDS. You may want to look at the PDF of the MSDS. Generally you should choose the most recent version. Also make sure you are choosing the correct manufacturer.
    • When you've decided which one(s) to add, check the box to the left of the desired MSDS(s) and click "Add"
    • NOTE: this only adds MSDSs to the MU Master eBinder. After you have done this, you must go back to Step 2 and assign the MSDS to the appropriate Level 3 group(s)
To LOG OUT:
  1. Click on "Sign Out" in the gray area in the top third of the screen. (The "Sign Out" entry is BLUE next to RED text that shows your sign in name.)
