Safe Storage Program

History

The HMM Committee canvassed its members and EHS HMM in FY02 for ideas similar to the Mercury Reduction Program that would contribute to increased safety in MU workplaces. One of the concerns evaluated was the use of standard refrigerators and freezers for storing flammable materials. A broader area of concern was the general shortage of suitable storage units for hazardous materials. Improper or inadequate storage of hazardous materials is a significant hazard that can readily contribute to loss of life and property; therefore, the HMM Committee authorized the development of a new program to address these risks.

The Program

The Safe Storage of Hazardous Materials Program is now available to Registered Users of Hazardous Materials under the auspices of the Hazardous Materials Management Committee. This program provides funding assistance for up to 50% of the final purchase cost of Flammable-Materials Storage Refrigerators, Explosion-Proof Refrigerators, and Chemical Storage Cabinets. The application form and its instructions may be downloaded using the links provided below. Completed forms must be sent to the Department of Environmental Health and Safety either by campus mail to EHS-HMM, 1710 East Campus Loop or by fax to (573) 884-5270.

Awards

The submission deadlines for any given Fiscal Year are the last Friday of October, December, February and April. Awards are not normally evaluated over the summer. Applications received after any deadline will automatically be included in the next review. During the week following each deadline, EHS will review the forms received for completeness and merit. Awards will be based upon previously identified deficiencies, relative risk reduction, and cost benefit.

Note: this program is primarily intended to assist RUs in correcting problems in existing spaces, not in new or remodeled spaces. Should an award be made in such spaces, the award may be reduced to 25% of the final purchase price. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the review. A notice of approval indicates that funds will be made available contingent on the purchase of the specified equipment. Please note that the program does not provide funds for installation. If installation is required, funds must be available and approved in order for the request to be approved.

Help

While the application form is straightforward, additional information has been provided in the companion instruction sheet.  It is best to check the Fisher Scientific web site for the most current selection.  Discounted MU pricing is only available through the eProcurement system (contact your department’s fiscal officer for assistance).  If you have additional questions or require more information, please contact EHS at (573) 882-3736 or by e-mail at .
