Mercury Reduction Program

History

Elemental mercury, also called metallic mercury, whether in a bottle or in a device, represents a significant environmental hazard; a hazard that MU would like to reduce and, if possible, to eliminate. The information and experience gained during the highly successful Mercury Reduction Program, which began in 1999 and was concluded in 2001, has provided the basis for a new, permanent program for meeting MU's short-term goal of mercury reduction and long-term goal of mercury elimination.

The Program

The Elemental Mercury Reduction Program is now available to Registered Users of Hazardous Materials. Under the auspices of the Hazardous Materials Management Committee, this program provides funding assistance for up to 100% of the purchase cost of mercury-free replacements for mercury-containing devices. The application form and its instructions may be downloaded using the links provided below. Completed forms must be sent to the Department of Environmental Health & Safety either by campus mail to EHS-HMM, 8 RPDB or by fax to (573) 882-7940. EHS will review the form for completeness and merit. The applicant will be informed of the outcome of the review.

The Pledge

The purpose of the Elemental Mercury Reduction Program is to reduce, and if possible to permanently eliminate, the use of elemental mercury at MU. The funds approved for this program must contribute to this goal now and in the future. Everyone's help is needed to reach this goal. Therefore, by signing, dating, and submitting the application form, the applicant is pledging to help minimize the use of elemental mercury and keep mercury-containing devices from returning to MU to the extent that they can.

Help

While the application form is straight forward, additional information has been provided in the companion instruction sheet. If you have additional questions or require more information, please contact EHS by phone at (573) 882-7018 or by e-mail at ehs@missouri.edu.
