Fire Factor

Annual Fire Factor Event
September 10, 2008
11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Lowry Mall - University of Missouri - Columbia Campus

Please plan to join us for the annual event dedicated exclusively to raising student awareness of fire safety and prevention. The event is held annually in the September from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the MU campus at Lowry Mall. Organizers of the event, the Columbia Fire Department, MU Student Life, and MU Environmental Health and Safety, hope that students will attend and learn about fire safety and prevention. Organizers also extend invitations to Columbia College and Stephens College students as well as MU Students. Attendance at this event averages between 500-1000.

Participating students will experience a taste of what fire fighter’s experience on a fire scene in a fun and exciting environment. Students will have the opportunity to fight a small fire with a portable fire extinguisher, take a ride in a Columbia Fire Department ladder Truck bucket, play a fire prevention video game designed by an MU student, and much more.

New this year, we will be including a “Live Room Burn”. This event will take place at about 11:50 AM at Speaker’s Circle. We will construct a life size replica of a student’s room and fill it with all the normal things typically found there; afterwards we will set it on fire. This will not only show the speed at which fire can move, but also the ferocity of its nature and why we teach students about reacting quickly to fire alarms.

Students will receive a free t-shirt and commemorative cup with the Fire Factor logo designed by MU students. Free pizza and soda is usually available between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Students may also register to win great prizes donated from local area businesses.

Sponsors: Many local radio and TV stations, Coca-Cola, local area businesses, Columbia Fire Department, MU Student Life, Mizzou After Dark, and MU Environmental Health and Safety.
