Open Flames
EHS must grant approval for use of open flames - special events - on campus. Open flames include, but are not limited to, candles, oil lamps, lanterns,
barbeque grills, theatrical special effects involving flames, sparks, various pyrotechnics and the like. No open flames are allowed without approval.
This approval process will assure the responsible person is identified, fire watch is present, elimination of fire hazard conditions though a site visit,
appropriate site personnel are familiar with and trained to use local fire equipment, and fire emergency conditions. No open flames are allowed in
the Residence Halls or apartments as per Residential Life Policy.
To obtain approval for use of open flames please contact
David Dorth AND
Shawn McCollom at least one (1) week prior to the scheduled event by completing and submitting the
Approval for Use of Open Flames - Special Events form in PDF Format or Word Format. The Safety Representative or designee may need to conduct a
site visit prior to approval.
Open Burns
Open burns include burning of outdoor vegetation debris or materials for natural resource management and conservation purposes. Open burning also
includes recreational camp fires, cropland burning in connection with agricultural or forestry operations, and fire fighting training. Prior to
planning any open burning activity, several reviews, issues, and notifications will be necessary and may require permitting by the Missouri Department
of Natural Resources (MoDNR Open Burning Rule). Advanced planning and proper notifications will avoid university life, environment, and property
losses. Please contact
David Dorth AND
Shawn McCollom before i
nitiating a plan for open burning. Please complete and forward the Permit for Open Burning in PDF Format or Word Format at least one (1) week prior
to anticipated open burn date [two(2) weeks for burns within the Columbia City Limits.] If there are occupied buildings not owned by the University
within 200 yards of the burn site, written approvals
may be required from the owners of those buildings. Allow extra time to obtain these
approvals should they be required. Final EHS approval is reserved for the day of the burn and will be contingent on current and forecasted wind speed.
