Biological Safety ClassesIntroduction to BiosafetyThe purpose of this class is to introduce new biohazardous material workers with the Biosafety Program. Topics covered include biosafety organization, biosafety committee, biosafety levels, risk assessments, safety procedures, sharps, select agents, security, inspections, biohazardous material types, purchase, shipment, storage, use, waste disposal, emergency procedures and available resources. This class is intended for all campus personnel working in a biosafety 2 or above facility." Biohazard Awareness The purpose of this class is to train ancillary personnel who work unescorted in biohazardous material use areas. Topics covered include do's and don'ts, security, biohazard sources, procedures and safety precautions, signs and labels, emergency response and available resources. This class is intended for ancillary workers in biohazard laboratories such as custodial, maintenance, IATS, police and related service staff. Biohazard Awareness Refresher This class is designed to give experienced ancillary staff, who work unescorted in biohazardous material use areas, an update of recent changes in the current biosafety program. The training will include an overview of topics such as do's and don'ts, security, biohazard sources, procedures and safety precautions, signs and labels, emergency response and available resources. All ancillary workers in biohazard laboratories or use areas must attend this training every 3 years. Bloodborne Pathogen Awareness This course covers the basics of blood borne diseases, universal precautions, housekeeping, exposure hazards, common sense rules, policy and available resources. The class is intended for all ancillary workers frequently visiting biohazard laboratories such as custodial, maintenance, IATS, police and related service staff. Bloodborne Pathogen Safety The purpose of this course is to enable students to gain an understanding of blood borne pathogens (BBP), transmission, exposure potential, incidents, universal precautions, Hepatitis B vaccine, emergency releases clean-up, policy and available resources. This class is intended for laboratory personnel working routinely with human BBP and other potentially infectious materials. Bloodborne Pathogen Safety Refresher The purpose of this class is to give experienced blood borne pathogen (BBP) workers an update of recent changes in the current BBP program. The training will include an overview of topics such as blood borne pathogens (BBP), transmission, exposure potential, incidents, universal precautions, Hepatitis B vaccine, emergency releases clean-up, policy and available resources. All BBP workers in biohazard laboratories or use areas must attend this training every year. Hood and Biosafety Cabinet Safety The purpose of this class is to enable the student to gain an understanding of laboratory hoods and biological safety cabinets. Topics covered include control type, design, air flow characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, safe work practices, inspections and certifications, hazard flags, emergency procedures and available resources. This class is intended for all campus laboratory personnel and maintenance staff working with or on laboratory hoods or biosafety cabinets. Biosafety Refresher The class is designed to give experienced biohazardous material workers an update of the biosafety program. Topics cover an overview of Introduction to Biosafety, discussion of site specific issues, inspections results, new policy/regulations, and biosafety resources. All biohazardous material workers in a biosafety level 2 or above facility must attend this training every 3 years.
