What is Electronic Waste (E-Waste)?

Electronic Waste—commonly referred to as e-waste or e-scrap—includes discarded electronic devices such as computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, televisions, and other digital or battery-powered equipment. These items often contain valuable materials that can be recycled, as well as hazardous components that require proper disposal.

The United States generates over 6.9 million tons of e-waste each year, making it one of the fastest-growing waste streams. Improper disposal of e-waste can lead to environmental pollution and human health risks due to the presence of heavy metals and toxic substances.

To help address this issue, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources encourages Missouri residents to recycle, repurpose, or donate unwanted electronics whenever possible.

  • For personally owned electronics: Contact Sustain Mizzou for information on upcoming campus or community recycling events.
  • For University-purchased electronics: All devices—whether functional or not—must be transferred to University of Missouri Surplus Properties for proper processing and redistribution in accordance with university policy.

Responsible e-waste management helps conserve natural resources, reduces landfill waste, and protects our environment.
