Employees at the University of Missouri may be exposed to hazardous materials or potentially dangerous environments during routine academic or research activities. The first and most effective line of defense is the use of engineering controls, such as fume hoods, local exhaust ventilation, and process isolation. However, when engineering controls are not feasible or do not fully eliminate risks, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required to reduce exposure and prevent injury.
PPE Expectations in Laboratories
The University has established minimum PPE expectations for anyone entering or working in laboratory spaces where hazardous materials are used. These expectations are outlined in the PPE Compliance Guide and include:
- Clothing that covers the full body (no shorts, skirts, or sandals)
- Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes
- Appropriately sized lab coats, fully fastened with wrist-length sleeves
- ANSI Z87-approved protective eyewear with side protection
Consistent use of PPE helps prevent injury and promotes a strong safety culture in research environments.
Exceptions to Minimum PPE Expectations
Environmental Health & Safety recognizes that limited exceptions may apply. Individuals may be present in a laboratory without PPE under the following circumstances:
- When working continuously in a documented, PI-approved "clean zone"
- When making a brief, no-contact visit without interacting with hazardous materials
- When present during periods where no hazardous materials or processes are active
Even under these exceptions, individuals must remain alert and are expected to don PPE or exit the lab if hazardous work is occurring nearby.
Hazard Assessments and EHS Support
If you are unsure what PPE is appropriate for your work, contact Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). Our staff can advise on PPE selection and, when needed, arrange a hazard assessment with the University’s Industrial Hygienist to determine the required protective measures based on the task and potential exposures.
EHS provides:
- Assistance with PPE procurement and training
- Respiratory protection guidance and fit testing
- Lab-specific PPE compliance consultations
For more information or guidance on selecting appropriate PPE, please contact labsafety@missouri.edu or refer to the PPE Purchasing and Selection Guide.
