Shipping Infectious Substances
Infectious substances are regulated as hazardous materials by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). As such, their transport is subject to strict regulations and requires specialized training.
What Is an Infectious Substance?
Under DOT regulations, an infectious substance is any material that is known or reasonably expected to contain a pathogen. A pathogen is defined as a microorganism (such as bacteria, viruses, rickettsiae, parasites, or fungi) or another agent, including prions (proteinaceous infectious particles), that can cause disease in humans or animals.
Do You Ship Infectious Substances?
If you ship materials that may contain pathogens or fall within the definition above, you are likely shipping an infectious substance and must comply with applicable regulations.
