Radiation Safety Classes

How to access radiation safety training through EHS Assistant for the first time:

Review the General Training Information for instructions on how to access EHSA for training. There is also a tutorial video "Access EHS Training Courses and Training Records" that may be useful.

If you are not on a RAM or X-Ray permit, then when you access the EHSA training portal, a list of courses will be available for you to take but none will be assigned to you. You can scroll through the list of available courses to begin taking the ones you need. The courses EHS490, EHS491, EHS492, and EHS493 are hosted through EHSA and do not require you to be on a permit to access. If you need to take any other trainings, including EHS460 X-Ray Safety, then you will first need to be listed on a permit (chem, rad, bio) with the appropriate training requirements before you can gain access to the other training database HSI. To add someone to a permit, you can review the tutorial video "Add/Edit Worker to a Permit".

Other training may be assigned on an individual basis depending on your worker function. If you are uncertain about which worker function to use when registering a new worker, contact rad@missouri.edu.

Radiation Safety Training at MU - EHS490/EHS491

Course Length: 1 - 2 Hours Register

The purpose of this self-paced, online course is to introduce new Radiation Workers to the specifics of the Radiation Safety Program at MU. The course content includes, but is not limited to, basic regulatory information and radiation safety program structure, basic radiation safety science, radiation exposure and dose limits, associated MU specific limits of contamination and radiation exposure, dose reduction techniques, surveys and instrumentation, purchase and receipt of radioactive material, security and safe handling, disposal of radioactive materials, spill response, and important information for the Permitted Individual (PI). This course is required every three years for campus and veterinary radiation workers (EHS490) and every year for hospital radiation workers (EHS491). Both EHS490 and EHS491 are the same training, just with different required completion frequencies. These courses are prerequisites for EHS492 and EHS493.

EHS490 for campus and veterinary workers is hosted by EHS Assistant (EHSA) and can be found in the EHSA Training Portal.  If the training course is not assigned to you, you can scroll through the list and take the course manually. EHS491 for hospital workers is hosted through the MUHC learning management system Cornerstone with a required completion date of April 30 every year. Log into Cornerstone, and search for the course "WBT 182 Radiation Safety Basics for Radioactive Materials". For both courses, you must achieve a score of 80% or greater on your quiz.

Veterinary Medicine Specific Radiation Safety Training (EHS492)

Course Length: 1 - 2 hours Register

The purpose of this self-paced, online course is to introduce new Veterinary Medicine Radiation Workers to the specifics of the Veterinary Medicine Radiation Safety Program at MU. This course will build upon knowledge learned in EHS490 and includes MU Veterinary Medicine Program specific radiation safety for radioactive materials use and X-Ray safety. This course must be completed prior to working with Radioactive Materials and X-Ray devices at the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital.

This course is for veterinary workers only and is hosted by EHS Assistant (EHSA) through the EHSA Training Portal. If the training course is not assigned to you, you can scroll through the list and take the course manually. This course is required once every three years for veterinary radiation workers. A quiz is found at the end of the training, and you must achieve a score of 80% or greater to pass the course.

Radiation Safety Training for Human Medical Use (EHS493)

Course Length: 1 - 2 Hours Register

This course is required annually and covers the basic principles of radioactive materials use under 10 CFR 35 human medical use. Hospital Radiation Workers must complete EHS491 prior to taking EHS493. You are required to achieve a 80% or greater on the quiz to pass.

This course is hosted through the MUHC learning management system Cornerstone with a required completion date of April 30 every year. Log into Cornerstone, and search for the course "WBT 183 Medical Radiation Safety for Radioactive Materials".

Dosimetry Training (EHS480)

Course Length: 1 Hours Register

The purpose of this self-paced, online course is to provide an in-depth introduction into proper ways for wearing a dosimeter. All workers who are assigned dosimeters must complete this training before receiving a dosimeter; this includes using both radioactive materials and radiation generating machines. The training covers topics such as different types of dosimeters and how they work, how to wear dosimeters properly, how your actions can impact your dose reports, regulatory dose limits, the ALARA program, and accessing your dose history.

For Hospital radiation workers, this course is hosted through the MUHC learning management system Cornerstone with a required completion date of April 30 every three years or as needed. Log into Cornerstone, and search for the course "WBT 184 Dosimetry Training".

For Campus and Veterinary radiation workers, this course is hosted by EHS Assistant (EHSA) through the EHSA Training Portal. If the training course is not assigned to you, you can scroll through the list and take the course manually. This course is required once every three years for all radiation workers assigned dosimetry. A quiz is found at the end of the training, and you must achieve a score of 80% or greater to pass the course.

DOT/IATA Training for Class 7 Radioactive Materials (EHS405/406)

Course Length: 1-2 Hours

The intent of the DOT course is to provide instruction for Radiation Workers on how to directly receive radioactive materials. The password for this course changes at the beginning of each month. If you may directly receive radioactive materials to your approved RAM space, you will need to contact EHS for the most current password. Once done, provide a copy of your certificate to EHS for documentation. DOT training is required once every three years. The IATA option is also available after completing the DOT portion of the course; IATA training is recommended for individuals who ship radioactive materials offsite and is required once every two years.

Radiation Generating Machine Safety Training for Research Uses (EHS460)

Course Length: 1 Hour Register

The purpose of this self-paced, online course is to give basic radiation safety training for research uses of radiation generating machines such as x-ray diffraction units, x-ray irradiators, and electron microscopes. Topics covered include basic radiation safety, radiation biology, and radiation dosimetry.

This course is hosted by HSI and can be found in EHS Assistant Training Portal.  If the training course is not assigned to you it can also be found under "Additional Resources" in the HSI portal.   You should turn off pop-up blockers before clicking the link to begin the training.  You will have three attempts to achieve a 80% or greater on your quiz.  If after the third attempt, you have not passed, additional in person training may be required.  There are 10 questions on the quiz.  The training works best when using the web browser Firefox.
