Tornado Emergencies

In the event of a tornado warning, take immediate action to protect yourself and others:

  • If indoors:
Move away from windows and glass doors. Seek shelter in a basement or a small, interior room or hallway on the lowest level of the building. Avoid large open spaces such as auditoriums, gymnasiums, or any area with a wide-span roof that may collapse.

  • Take protective cover:
If possible, shelter under sturdy furniture to protect against falling debris.

  • If outdoors:
Lie flat in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine and cover your head with your hands. If you can see the tornado and there is time, move away from its path at a right angle.

  • Be prepared:
Familiarize yourself with your Building Emergency Plan and know the designated Tornado Shelter Location(s) for your area in advance. Building Emergency Plan and Shelter Location(s).
