Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies are developed through a combination of regulatory review, best practices, and input from key stakeholders—including the Laboratory Safety Committee and other campus partners. These policies are designed to align with university operations while meeting or exceeding applicable local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.

All faculty, staff, students, and campus affiliates are expected to comply with Environmental Health & Safety policies, as well as with all applicable regulatory requirements. Compliance helps ensure a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible campus.

Policy Authority

Overarching University policies related to health and safety are published in Chapter 7 of the Business Policy and Procedure Manual (BPPM). Of particular importance is Policy 7:001, which authorizes EHS to establish and enforce campus-wide safety and environmental policies.

Accessing EHS Policies

EHS policies are organized by specific Program Area—such as Chemical Safety, Biosafety, Radiation Safety, and Environmental Compliance. These can be accessed using the gold navigation bar on the EHS website.

To improve transparency and ease of access, a dedicated Policies section was initiated in May 2022 to centralize EHS policy documents. This ongoing project aims to provide a comprehensive and searchable repository for all formalized safety policies.
