PPE Minimum Standards

To promote a safer and more consistent research environment, Environmental Health & Safety has established a minimum standard for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in laboratories where hazardous materials are used. This standard helps ensure that all laboratory personnel are appropriately protected from chemical, biological, and physical hazards during their work.

All individuals are expected to wear:

  • Full-length clothing that covers the entire body.

  • Closed-toe and closed-heel footwear (no sandals or open shoes).

  • Appropriately sized lab coats that fully cover the torso and arms.

  • ANSI Z87-approved protective eyewear with side protection (regular prescription glasses do not meet this requirement unless modified).

PPE compliance will be documented during lab inspections. Observations of “compliant” or “not compliant” will be reported to the Principal Investigator and included in aggregate reports shared with campus leadership.

Limited exceptions apply for approved clean zones, brief no-contact visits, and periods when no hazards are present. Individuals must remain alert and don PPE if hazardous conditions arise.

Compliance Guide

The PPE Compliance Guide outlines the minimum personal protective equipment requirements for laboratories where hazardous materials are present. The guide clarifies expectations, outlines exemptions, and supports a consistent, campus-wide approach to laboratory safety. It serves as a practical resource for lab personnel, supervisors, and managers, and includes links to PPE selection tools and updated inspection criteria to reinforce compliance.
