Biological Safety Classes
Biosafety Training (EHS201 & EHS202)
The purpose of this class is to meeting the basic training needs of all biohazardous material workers. Topics covered include biosafety organization, biosafety levels, risk assessments, safety procedures, sharps, select agents, security, inspections, biohazardous material types, purchase, shipment, storage, use, waste disposal, emergency procedures and available resources. All biohazardous material workers in at biosafety level 1 or above laboratory must complete this training prior to starting work and every 3 years thereafter.
This course is hosted by HSI and can be found in EHS Assistant Training Portal. If the training course is not assigned to you it can also be found under "Additional Resources" in the HSI portal. The training should take about 1 hour 30 min to complete. You should turn off pop-up blockers before clicking the link below to begin the training.
The Biosafety course is comprised of two modules: EHS201 MU Specific Biosafety Training, and EHS202 Biosafety Training. You must complete both modules and score at a minimum 80% on each assessment or quiz to receive credit for this course.
Bloodborne Pathogen Safety (EHS220)
The purpose of this class is to enable students to gain an understanding of blood borne pathogens (BBP), transmission, exposure potential, incidents, universal precautions, Hepatitis B vaccine, emergency releases clean-up, policy and available resources. This class is intended for laboratory personnel and investigators working routinely with human BBP and other potentially infectious materials. All BBP workers in biohazard laboratories or use areas must attend this training every year.
This course is hosted by HSI and can be found in EHS Assistant Training Portal. If the training course is not assigned to you it can also be found under "Additional Resources" in the HSI portal. The training should take about 20 min to complete. You should turn off pop-up blockers before clicking the link below to begin the training.
The Bloodborne Pathogen course is comprised of one modules: EHS220 Bloodborne Pathogen Training. You must the modules and score at a minimum 80% on the quiz to receive credit for this course.
Biosafety Cabinet Safety (EHS230)
The purpose of this class is to enable the student to gain an understanding of how biological safety cabinets (BSC) function and how to work safely in them. A BSC is the primary means of containment developed for working safely with infectious microorganisms. Topics covered include how a BSC works, how to work safely inside a BSC, types of BSCs, decontamination and shut-down procedures, and other best practices.
This course is hosted by HSI and can be found in EHS Assistant Training Portal. If the training course is not assigned to you it can also be found under "Additional Resources" in the HSI portal. The training should take about 1 hour to complete. You should turn off pop-up blockers before clicking the link below to begin the training.
The Biosafety Cabinet course is comprised of one module: EHS230 MU Biosafety Cabinets Training. You must complete the module and score at a minimum 80% on the assessment to receive credit for this course.
Autoclave Safety (EHS203)
The topics covered in this training module are related to the safe and effective use of autoclaves and include an introduction to autoclaves, items that should and should not be autoclaved, effective use, maintenance, efficacy testing, record keeping and injury response. By the end of this module, you should be able to identify common terms, hazards, and better understand safe and effective autoclave use. This information is NOT intended to be an operation procedure for any specific autoclave or for setting cycle parameters. Users should ALWAYS consult and become familiar with the manufacturer's operation manual prior to use of the autoclave.
This course is hosted by HSI and can be found in EHS Assistant Training Portal. If the training course is not assigned to you it can also be found under "Additional Resources" in the HSI portal. The training should take about 20 minutes to complete. You should turn off pop-up blockers before clicking the link below to begin the training.
The Autoclave Safety course is comprised of one module: EHS203 Autoclave Safety Training. You must complete the module and score at a minimum 80% on the assessment to receive credit for this course.
Recombinant and/or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (rsNA) (EHS240)
The purpose of this class is to familiarize the Principal Investigator and lab personnel with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules. These guidelines are the standard for containment and safety research practices involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules. All lab staff in recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecule research laboratories are required to complete this training program initially and then again every three years.
The Recombinant DNA training course is comprised of one module: EHS240 Recombinant DNA Training. You must complete the module and score at a minimum 80% on the assessment to receive credit for this course.
