Containment Failure

Here is a list of a few key safety aspects related to the containment of dangerous, toxic, or generally hazardous liquid chemicals in bulk quantities.

1.  Chemicals in bulk quantities should be kept in their original containers until needed.

2.  These chemicals should have secondary containment suitable for the chemicals reactive state.  Secondary containment should be large enough to be 110% larger than the full capacity of liquid stored.

3.  Enough chemical for a three month usage is the maximum quantity that can be stored unless that quantity exceeds the allowable limits for that chemical.  In general, 5 gallons is the maximum allowable limit with exceptions for highly flammable chemicals.

4.  In the event of containment failure of both the original container and secondary containment of known chemicals, follow the instructions for a simple spill.

5.  In the event of containment failure of both the original container and secondary containment of an unknown chemical mixture, follow the instructions for a complicated spill
