Environmental Releases/Spills
Releases of materials to the outside environment, including spills on land or into storm drains, have the potential to cause environmental damage.
Spills into waterways or may reach waterways or storm drains
- 1. Stop the source of an ongoing release, if you can do so safely.
- 2. Immediately contact Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) at (573) 882-7018. At night, on weekends, or holidays call the University of Missouri Police Department (MUPD) at (573) 882- 7201. State you have a STORM WATER spill.
- 3. Take action to contain the spill if it is possible to do so without jeopardizing personal well being.
- 4. If possible, stay on site to meet EHS when they arrive.
- 5. Do not call state or national chemical numbers without prior authorization from EHS, unless the spill is of catastrophic proportions and immediate contact with EHS or MUPD is impossible.
Spills on land that are unlikely to reach waterways or storm drains
- Stop the source of on ongoing release, if you can do so safely.
- If you have the training and supplies, clean up the spill and place it in heavy duty poly bag or drum.
- If you do not have the training or supplies, call Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) at (573) 882-7018. At night, on weekends, or holidays call the University of Missouri Police Department (MUPD) at (573) 882-7201. State you have a spill of [material name] and you are requesting assistance from EHS.
- If possible, stay on site to meet EHS when they arrive.
- Do not call state or national chemical numbers without prior authorization from EHS.
