One-Time and Intermittent Events

In order to minimize the many safety hazards and liabilities associated with hosting special events at MU, EHS strongly encourages all departments and groups to begin planning early. Any event that involves use of MU Facilities (both indoor and outdoor) must be in compliance with the Business Policy and Procedure Manual (BPPM). Begin by consulting the table labeled "Reserving facilities and grounds" about 1/3 of the way down in BPPM 6:050 - Use of Facilities.

Unless otherwise noted in the table, outdoor spaces are overseen by MU Operations. Begin by completing the form "Reserving MU Outdoor Space" in the General Forms section of EHS' form page.

Events with Special Considerations

In addition to the process above, some events require additional safety or environmental considerations. For example events using colored powder outdoors (e.g. Color Run) are restricted on the main campus as all storm water flows to a stream on EPA's impaired list, which triggers restrictive release criteria. The use of live animals on the core campus have to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Some events must be evaluated for public safety concerns such as dunk tanks and mechanical bulls. Fundraising events that involve destruction of property (such as a Piano Bash, Car Bash or Plate Smash) require extensive additional controls for public safety. EHS has prepared policies for several common events, below. It is suggested you review applicable policies to familiarize yourself with the mandatory requirements prior to beginning any formal request process
